Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content

This course is about the mechanical behaviour of structures, machines, structural and machine components. Those enrolling in this paper are expected to have successfully completed Engineering Mechanics and are therefore able to calculate forces and moments in bars, beams, shafts and pin-jointed frames and have an understanding of the meaning of direct stress in materials. Topics covered includes calculation of stresses and displacements in bars, shafts, beams and frames and critical loads of struts, using conditions of equilibrium, material properties and geometric support and connection conditions.

This paper is taught through lectures, tutorials, a laboratory, class demonstrations and interactive computer programs. The first 7 weeks of lectures are common for ENGCV212 and ENGMP213.

Important Note for International Students: For international students in New Zealand under student visas, regular attendance is part of your visa obligation and is checked as a requirement on the University under the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, to which the University is a signatory. Academic staff are formally required to monitor attendance in classes and submission of compulsory assessment events/items and to report to Waikato International in the event that any problem with irregular attendance or non-submission is not resolved.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • calculate normal stress distribution in beams due to bending
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • calculate shear stresses and angle of twists in shafts and tubes due to torsional loading
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • calculate the deflection of beams due to lateral loading
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • calculate shear stress distribution in beams due to shearing force and locate the shear centre of beams
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • calculate principal stresses and maximum shear stress due to combined loading and determine the factor of safety based on failure criteria.
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • calculate axial stresses and displacements due to axial loading, temperature change and centripetal acceleration
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • calculate critical loads of struts

Assessment

Edit Assessments Content

Internally assessed components in addition to final exam. include tests, a lab and assignments. Purely numerical errors will not generally be penalised but unreasonably high/low values without any comments may be subject to some penalty. Lack of clarity in the answers, including absence of freebody diagrams may lead to a reduction in marks.

The assignments (if applicable) will be uploaded onto Moodle prior to the dates given on the lecture schedule. Lab sheets will be handed out at the labs.

The Final Examination will be a closed book examination, and the topics covered will reflect the content of the whole course.

The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 50:50. There is no final exam. The final exam makes up 50% of the overall mark.

The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 50:50 or 0:0, whichever is more favourable for the student. The final exam makes up either 50% or 0% of the overall mark.
